Network of Women Against Violence in Southwestern Serbia marked the Day of Remembrance of the women victims of violence in their cities – Mreža žena Jugozapadne Srbije obeležila Dan sećanja na žene žrtve nasilja

May 26th, 2018 – Organizations that are members of the Network of Women Against Violence in Southwestern Serbia marked the Day of Remembrance of the women victims of violence in their cities. The organization “Women’s Center Uzice” and “Impuls” from Tutin installed the “Reaction instead of crime” installations in the central squares. The installation simulates the place of crime – the house, the most insecure place for women victims of violence. With this installation, the organizers sent a strong message and reminded the public that most of the killings were actually happening where they should all be the safest, and once again pointed to the main slogan of the campaign: When the system is not reacting, the offender reacts.

Civil society organization“Women’s Forum Prijepolje” held a street action with banners “No woman less, no more dead”, “We stand for women whose voice is not heard anymore”, “React until it’s too late”, “Stop femicide”, “We want life without violence“… and activists talked with their citizens about gender based violence.

Members of the “Fenomena”, coordinating organization from Kraljevo, a week after the Day of Remembrance of the women victims of violence, went out on the street to point to the rise of femicide and to point out that home is the most insecure place for a woman. From Fenomena reports that in the last eight years, on the basis of media writing, at least 251 women have been killed in domestic violence, and in one third cases the violence that preceded the murder was reported to one of the competent institutions, which means that they did not react in an adequate way. In 10 out of 26 cases of femicide in 2017, institutions had information about the violence that was committed against a woman, but it wasn‘t done enough to prevent the killing – show research made by women’s organizations.

“Today we also celebrate two years since the launch of the European campaign called Step Up! implemented by the European Network of Women Against Violence, whose member is the Association of Fenomena. The translation of the name of the campaign speaks about the goal of the campaign – we ask the countries of Europe to step forward and take responsibility for the implementation of the Conventions and provide access to specialized services intended for women victims of violence and their children, “says Slađana Luković from the Fenomena Association.

Within the framework of this campaign, the Association of Fenomena will carry out activities in the next few months dedicated to bring closer the Istanbul Convention to the citizens of Kraljevo.
