Nasilje nad ženama – doba Korone/ Violence Against Women – Corona time

Violence Against Women – Corona time, is a topic that is little talked about in Montenegro and which we opened and discussed with the citizens of Niksic at the Public Tribune. The tribune was organized within the project “Fight against domestic violence during the COVID 19 pandemic”, which is jointly realized by the Safe Women’s House, SOS Nikšić and 5 other partner organizations.
An OSCE survey conducted in 2018 (which included more than 1,200 women) shows that every fifth woman has experienced physical or sexual violence after the age of 15. Earlier, a UNDP survey indicated that 62 percent of surveyed women were afraid to report violence for fear of revenge, and 24 percent for condemnation and shame. In most situations, the perpetrators are partners or husbands, to whom women often return.
In the period since the outbreak of the pandemic caused by COVID 19 and since the introduction of measures by the Government of Montenegro on the National SOS line, there has been an increase in the number of calls. The measures introduced during the pandemic mean that women are forced to spend much more time in isolation with the perpetrator and thus are at a higher risk of violence. All of this further affects the feeling of helplessness in women who are in violence.
In what way did the COVID 19 pandemic affect violence against women in Montenegro, from the practice of the SOS hotline Nikšić, the citizens were introduced by the executive coordinator of the organization, Natasa Medjedović. After a short presentation, a discussion was opened in which the citizens presented their views and observations on violence against women and domestic violence in general and VAW during the pandemic. The citizens also presented the problems they encountered during the pandemic regarding the work of certain institutions and in the defense of their human rights.
