6 June 2018 – Judges and prosecutors of the basic and district courts and prosecutor’s offices from East Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Bijeljina, and Doboj regions participated in a three-day education on judicial response to gender based violence, and protection of women survivors of violence in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Overall objective was to increase awareness of judges and prosecutors about gender stereotypes that can influence decisions in judicial proceedings, gender prejudices in the judicial system in order to enable equality of parties in the proceedings and employees in the judicial institutions. Education also aimed to encourage judges and prosecutors to take an active role in protecting rights of women and children survivors of sexual and GBV that appear in criminal proceedings as injured parties/witnesses.
Education was organized at the end of May in Neum, B&H, by the Foundation United Women Banja Luka, in cooperation with the Center for Education of Judges and Prosecutors of the Republika Srpska, and support of the B&H High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council, as a part of the project “Improving Prevention and Combating Gender Based Violence in B&H”, financially supported by the Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation from Sweden. It followed the civil society monitoring of criminal and minor offence cases on sexual and gender based violence at twenty-two courts throughout the Bosnia and Herzegovina that the Foundation United Women Banja Luka conducted during 2016, in partnership with the Center of Women’s Rights from Zenica, with contribution of the NGO Buducnost Modrica, Most Visegrad, Lara Bijeljina, and Zena BiH Mostar, and continuous public advocacy for improving status and access to justice to women survivors of gender based violence.
Activities will continue through new cycle of monitoring planned for 2019, as well as establishing Advocacy/Lobbying Group, and direct work with the subject of protection from violence on improving support and access to justice for women survivors of violence.
