Activities on International Day of the Girl Child/ Međunarodni dan djevojčica

11. October is celebating as a International Day of the Girl Child.

SOS Helpline Niksic have organized the public event, in order to mark this day, and to raise awerenes of public, especialy women and girls on phenomenon of sexual violence. Sexual violence is the least reported violence, but there is much more cases of sexual violence than we want to admit.

The truth about sexual abuse the public tends to suppress, relativize and deny. Sexual abuse happens in relationships of trust and in those places we tend to believe they are safe for children and we don’t check it out. People don’t like to talk about this because this includes family, school, friends. In other words, sexual violence is most often perpetrated by persons whom the victim knows or trusts.
Our society does not know much about the phenomenon of sexual violence and its mechanisms, because sexual violence is kept silent and we choose to pretend that it does not exist.
On the other hand, institutions and people tend to react only to the most difficult forms, and to talk about the most difficult forms. While insults, sexist and degrading jokes we tend to relativize and normalize and then there is no adequate reaction, or timely reaction.

During the event and  discussion with the citizens we have introduced them the neccesary measures that state should undertook to protect survivors of sexual violence and to improve availible help and support for them. At the end we have introduced them with availible services that we provide for women and children survivor of any kind of violence including sexual violence, since Montenegro dont have specialised services for survivors of sexual violsuce only, such as National SOS Helpline, shelter, confidental person….
